ASIATODAY.ID, MOSCOW – Russia has issued a stark warning of non-diplomatic retaliation after accusing Ukraine of launching a large-scale drone attack on the official residence of President Vladimir Putin, in what Moscow described as an act of state terrorism.
According to the Kremlin, 91 long-range kamikaze drones were launched toward Putin’s state residence in Russia’s Novgorod Region overnight on December 28–29.
Russian air defenses intercepted all incoming drones, with no casualties or material damage reported.
Despite the failed strike, Russian officials said the incident represents a serious escalation, particularly as it occurred during ongoing negotiations involving Russia and the United States aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict.
International Condemnation Emerges
Several foreign governments condemned the alleged attack. The United Arab Emirates expressed solidarity with Russia and rejected what it described as a dangerous act threatening regional and global stability.
In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “strongly condemned the attempt to target the residence of His Excellency Vladimir Putin” and reaffirmed its opposition to all forms of violence.
Nicaragua also denounced the incident, with its co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo sending a message of “active solidarity” to Moscow, calling the strike a terrorist attack intended to sabotage peace efforts.
Moscow: Response Will Go Beyond Diplomacy
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow would revise its negotiating position in light of the attack, though Russia would not withdraw from US-mediated peace talks.
“Targets for retaliatory strikes and the timing of their implementation have been determined,” Lavrov said on December 29, 2025, signaling that Russia’s response would not be limited to diplomatic measures.
Russian officials stressed that the drone strike was an attempt to undermine negotiations at a critical moment.
Trump Reacts With Anger
US President Donald Trump reportedly reacted with anger and shock after learning of the incident during a phone call with Putin.
Speaking at the White House, Trump said the attack occurred at a “very delicate period” and reiterated that his decision to deny Ukraine’s request for Tomahawk cruise missiles was intended to avoid further escalation.
“Thank God we did not give the Tomahawks,” Trump said.
Russian Lawmakers Demand Tough Action
Russian lawmakers across the political spectrum condemned the strike, with some calling it an attempt to physically eliminate the Russian president.
Several legislators urged decisive retaliation, including strikes on Ukrainian government facilities, arguing that Kiev was deliberately seeking to derail peace efforts.
Ukraine Denies Involvement
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky denied any involvement in the alleged attack, accusing Moscow of fabricating the incident to justify retaliatory strikes and undermine diplomatic progress.
Russia, however, insists that the scale of the operation makes official Ukrainian involvement unavoidable.
Rising Risk of Escalation
The alleged drone strike on Putin’s residence marks one of the most sensitive moments in the Russia–Ukraine conflict, raising fears of a broader escalation as Moscow signals a readiness to respond outside traditional diplomatic channels.
With peace talks already fragile, the incident has intensified uncertainty over the conflict’s next phase. (RT)
