ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Qatar-based defense conglomerate Barzan Holdings has officially entered Indonesia’s defense sector after signing a Strategic Cooperation Agreement with Republikorp, a key strategic partner of Indonesia’s national defense industry.
The agreement establishes a dedicated joint venture (JV) to lead operations in Indonesia, marking a transformative milestone in Indonesia–Qatar defense relations. The partnership carries a total value of US$2.3 billion and is backed by direct support from the Government of Qatar.
Under the comprehensive cooperation framework, the joint venture will spearhead large-scale modernization and overhaul programs across both naval (maritime) and land-based defense systems.
The initiative is designed to significantly enhance the operational readiness and system interoperability of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).
In the maritime domain, the partnership will focus on the integration of advanced mission systems and next-generation digital solutions aimed at strengthening the reliability and combat readiness of Indonesia’s naval fleet.
Meanwhile, land-based modernization efforts will prioritize the integration and upgrading of critical subsystems, including precision weapon systems, ammunition, and supporting platforms.
“This partnership goes far beyond the acquisition of hardware,” said Norman Joesoef, Founder of Republikorp, in a statement on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
“It reflects the deepening bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Qatar. Strong financial backing from Barzan Holdings, combined with the supply of high-technology defense systems, is a fundamental catalyst in accelerating our technological roadmap.”
According to Joesoef, the collaboration enables Indonesia’s defense industry to leapfrog into a new era of capability, directly strengthening the technological edge of the TNI while ensuring the armed forces are equipped with advanced and interoperable systems required to safeguard national sovereignty in an increasingly complex global security environment.
The joint venture is expected to play a strategic role in positioning Indonesia as a regional defense modernization hub, while reinforcing Qatar’s footprint in Southeast Asia’s rapidly evolving defense and security landscape. (AT Network)
