ASIATODAY.ID, LONDON — President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto held a meeting with King Charles III in London on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

The meeting resulted in a strategic commitment between Indonesia and the United Kingdom to cooperate on ecosystem restoration and environmental conservation, with a particular focus on 57 national parks across Indonesia.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said the primary focus of the meeting was strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fields of environmental protection and nature conservation.

The UK, he noted, expressed its commitment to supporting Indonesia’s efforts to restore and enhance ecosystems in national park areas throughout the country.

“President Prabowo met with King Charles III, and the core outcome of the meeting was a shared commitment and cooperation from the UK to assist Indonesia in restoring ecosystems and supporting the recovery of 57 national parks,” Teddy told reporters at Stansted Airport, London.

According to Teddy, the cooperation builds on and reinforces conservation initiatives that are already underway in several strategic areas.

One such initiative is at Way Kambas National Park in Lampung, which is internationally known as a key center for Sumatran elephant conservation.

“Current cooperation is already taking place at Way Kambas National Park in relation to elephant conservation,” he said.

In addition to Way Kambas, conservation cooperation is also being implemented in the Peusangan area of Aceh.

Teddy explained that the land involved is owned by President Prabowo and has been formally handed over to the state for environmental preservation purposes.

The total area allocated for these conservation efforts covers approximately 90,000 hectares across several locations. However, not all of the land will be designated specifically for elephant conservation.

“This will be determined by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), deciding which areas are suitable for elephant conservation and which should be allocated to other ecosystems,” Teddy added.

The meeting between President Prabowo and King Charles III underscores the strengthening of the Indonesia–UK environmental alliance, positioning green diplomacy as a key pillar of bilateral relations amid growing global attention to climate change and environmental sustainability. (AT Network)
