Lunar New Year Meets Betawi Roots: Cultural Fusion Lights Up Jakarta’s Heart

The Jakarta Lunar New Year Festival 2026 has transformed into a grand stage of cultural acculturation, uniting Chinese and Betawi heritage at the iconic Bundaran Hotel Indonesia. Special

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The 2026 Lunar New Year celebration in Jakarta is more than a festive tradition.

Under the leadership of Governor Pramono Anung, the Jakarta Lunar New Year Festival 2026 has transformed into a grand stage of cultural acculturation, uniting Chinese and Betawi heritage at the iconic Bundaran Hotel Indonesia.

Accompanied by Vice Governor Rano Karno, Pramono attended the festival on Friday, February 13, 2026, while also reviewing decorative preparations across Jakarta’s Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD).

Jakarta as a Global, Inclusive City

Governor Pramono emphasized that the festival reflects the Jakarta Provincial Government’s commitment to inclusivity and interfaith harmony.

“Jakarta is a city for everyone. All officially recognized religions, including Lunar New Year celebrations, are embraced and celebrated together here,” he stated.

He further highlighted the profound contribution of the Chinese-Indonesian community to the formation of Betawi culture. This long-standing cultural interaction has shaped Jakarta’s identity—visible in its traditions, language, architecture, cuisine, and performing arts.

Historically, Chinese-Betawi acculturation gave birth to distinctive cultural expressions such as gambang kromong music and various hybrid artistic traditions that remain vibrant today.

A Symphony of Cultures: Mandarin Sung by Java, Betawi, and Sunda

One of the festival’s most remarkable highlights was the “Jakarta Lunar Symphony,” featuring a colossal ensemble of around 50 traditional Chinese musical instruments.

In a powerful symbol of unity, performers from Javanese, Betawi, and Sundanese communities sang Mandarin-language songs—demonstrating that harmony in Jakarta is not merely symbolic, but actively lived.

The festival at Bundaran HI runs from February 13–17, 2026, showcasing:

– 3D Lantern installations representing the 12 Chinese zodiac signs
– Harmony Lantern Walk
– LED Pagoda “Cahaya Harmoni”
– God of Fortune (Cai Sen Ye) appearances
– Liong (dragon) dance and barongsai (lion dance) parades
– Laser light performances

From TMII to Monas: Lunar New Year Across the Capital

The celebrations extend beyond Bundaran HI, activating major cultural and historic landmarks across the city:

– Festival Pecinan Jakarta at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (February 15–17, 2026)
– Harmoni Jakarta powered by Jakarta City Branding at Blok M Hub
– “Semarak Imlek Nasional” video mapping at Monumen Nasional
– Jakarta Light Festival – Chinese New Year Edition at Kota Tua Jakarta
– Jakarta Temple Festival involving various temples across the capital
– The grand Cap Go Meh finale on March 3, 2026, in Glodok Chinatown

The entire program is the result of collaboration between the Jakarta Provincial Government, state-owned enterprises, central government institutions, and private sector partners.

“This is the spirit of collaboration to present an inclusive and vibrant Lunar New Year celebration in Jakarta,” Pramono affirmed.

SCBD Transformed: Urban Aesthetics and Cultural Tolerance

Vice Governor Rano Karno explained that the Lunar New Year Decoration Competition—featuring around 98 buildings—aims to enhance urban aesthetics while strengthening social harmony.

Decorations have been installed from January 19 to February 17, with judging sessions on February 12 and 17. The SCBD area has been transformed into a sea of red lanterns, zodiac ornaments, and artistic installations, creating a visually immersive celebration.

“This initiative not only beautifies the city, but also reinforces harmony through the inseparable acculturation of Chinese and Betawi cultures,” Rano said.

Cultural Acculturation as Jakarta’s Modern Identity

The Jakarta Lunar New Year Festival 2026 sends a clear message: Jakarta is not merely Indonesia’s economic and political hub—it is a living space of cultural convergence.

Amid its fast-paced metropolitan rhythm, Chinese-Betawi acculturation remains a foundational social glue.

Lunar New Year, once largely community-based, now thrives openly in public spaces—signaling that Jakarta’s identity is built not on uniformity, but on diversity carefully nurtured.

Today’s Jakarta is a true melting pot of harmony—where lion dances perform beneath skyscrapers, Mandarin songs echo through multicultural ensembles, and centuries-old traditions find renewed meaning in a modern global city. (AT Network)
