ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia is accelerating its transformation into a global critical minerals hub as PT Vale Indonesia Tbk advances its low-carbon nickel processing project in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, strengthening the country’s position in the rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain.
A major milestone was reached with the arrival of an autoclave, a key processing unit for the company’s High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) facility under the Indonesia Growth Project (IGP) Morowali.
The equipment marks significant progress in the development of an advanced nickel processing facility designed to produce higher-value materials for the global battery industry while supporting Indonesia’s ambition to develop a more sustainable mineral processing ecosystem.
The Morowali project is part of Indonesia’s broader downstream strategy to move beyond raw nickel exports and establish domestic capabilities in processing critical minerals used in electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and advanced manufacturing.
Advancing the Global EV Battery Supply Chain
The HPAL facility in Sambalagi, Bungku Pesisir District, Morowali, is designed to produce approximately 90,000 tonnes of contained nickel per year in the form of Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) — a key intermediate material used in lithium-ion battery production.
The facility will process around 10.4 million tonnes of limonite nickel ore annually sourced from PT Vale Indonesia’s Bahodopi mining area.
Through HPAL technology, low-grade limonite ore can be processed using high temperature, high pressure, and sulfuric acid treatment to extract nickel and cobalt more efficiently, creating products with greater value for the international battery market.
As demand for electric vehicles continues to expand worldwide, access to reliable supplies of nickel and other critical minerals has become a strategic priority for automotive manufacturers and battery producers across Asia and beyond.
Supporting a Lower-Carbon Industrial Future
PT Vale Indonesia President Director and CEO Bernardus Irmanto said the arrival of the autoclave represents an important milestone in the construction of the low-carbon nickel processing facility.
“This milestone reflects our commitment with partners to develop competitive nickel processing while prioritizing sustainability, safety, and long-term benefits for Indonesia,” he said.
The project incorporates several initiatives aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions, including waste heat recovery power generation technology, which converts excess heat from production processes into electricity.
The company is also planning the integration of solar power generation as part of efforts to increase the use of cleaner energy within the industrial area.
Indonesia’s Strategic Nickel Advantage
The Morowali HPAL project has been designated as a National Strategic Project (PSN) by the Indonesian government, highlighting its importance in accelerating mineral downstreaming and strengthening industrial competitiveness.
Indonesia holds one of the world’s largest nickel reserves and has positioned nickel downstreaming as a key driver of economic transformation — shifting from exporting raw commodities toward producing higher-value industrial products.
The country’s growing nickel processing ecosystem has attracted major global attention as nations seek to secure stable supply chains for clean energy technologies.

With investments in advanced processing technology and cleaner industrial practices, Indonesia is seeking to play a larger role in the future of the global energy transition.
