ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Train Collision (KA) incident in Indonesia involving the Turangga Train and the Bandung Local Train at KM 181+700 section of road between Haurpugur Station – Cicalengka Station, Bandung Regency, West Java, on Friday, January 5 2024, inviting attention from various parties.

The biggest focus regarding the cause of the accident, was there an element of sabotage or was it purely an accident or human error?

Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) Transportation Expert Sony Sulaksono Wibowo highlighted single tracks on railway lines in Indonesia, one of which was at the crossing where the accident occurred.

He believes that single track trains are prone to accidents.

“In train procedures, for a single track, trains must take turns. The priority train is usually Turangga. Then the local train enters one of the emplacements at the nearest station, waits for the Turangga train to pass, then the local train enters the main line,” said Sony in a statement on the itb.ac.id page as quoted on Friday, January 5 2024.

According to Sony, there are several reasons that could be the reason for the accident.

He said that train collisions on the same route as the Turangga Train and the Bandung Raya Train could occur due to signal, communication problems and so on.

“There is a possibility that it was due to miscommunication. Is it wrong with the signal or wrong with the driver, or wrong with the signal? Because there is communication through signals and through signs,” he said.

Sony encourages PT KAI and other related parties to immediately build a double track so that a similar incident does not occur.

“In the future, double track construction on the southern route must be accelerated. The new double track is the northern route. The southbound route was delayed. Because after all, trains are still one of the favorite forms of transportation for long distances, especially during the holiday season,” he said.

On the other hand, said Sony, it is also necessary to improve the various possibilities for problems arising in the field related to communication, such as signal improvements to signal communication on routes that are still single track.

Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) began carrying out a series of investigations into the train collision incident. (AT Network)
