ASIATODAY.ID, BEIJING – Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said his government supports the resolution issued at the Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) regarding ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Gaza Strip.
“The Arab League Summit and the OIC Extraordinary Summit sent a clear message to realize a ceasefire, protect civilians, increase humanitarian assistance and implement a two-state solution. This was welcomed by China,” he told media crews in Beijing, China, on Monday .
The OIC Extraordinary Summit on October 11 2023 produced a resolution containing 31 strong and harsh decisions to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The leaders of the 57 OIC member countries, including the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, condemned Israeli aggression in Gaza and urged the UN Security Council to pass a strong resolution to stop Israeli aggression in Gaza.
“The situation in Gaza is quite worrying. China supports all efforts aimed at de-escalating the situation and restoring peace,” said Mao Ning.
According to him, since the latest conflict between Palestine and Israel erupted, China has maintained close communication with relevant parties to urge a ceasefire and create peace.
“To end the current conflict, China’s position is very similar to that of Arab, Islamic and African countries. China will work together with relevant parties to continue relentless efforts to protect civilians, defuse tensions, continue efforts at peace negotiations, and realize peace ,” he said.
In the resolution, the OIC condemned the forced transfer of 1.5 million Palestinians from northern to southern Gaza, which according to the 4th Geneva Convention constitutes a war crime, and condemned double standards in the application of international law.
The OIC also encourages the start of a serious and sincere peace process to achieve peace based on a two-state solution.
Conditions in Gaza are increasingly worrying because a number of hospitals are no longer able to operate. Al Shifa Hospital, for example, has been without electricity for three days and lacks water.
“It has been more than a month since the conflict in Gaza broke out. The humanitarian situation on the ground has become dire. Al Shifa Hospital experiencing difficulties is an example of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. China is calling for an immediate ceasefire between the conflict parties and making every effort to protect civilians,” Mao Ning said.
He said the international community needed to take substantive steps and make major efforts to increase humanitarian efforts.
Israel has launched non-stop air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip – including on hospitals, residences and places of worship – since Hamas launched a cross-border attack on October 7, 2023.
The Israeli strikes have killed 11,100 people, including more than 8,000 women and children, the state media office in Gaza said on Sunday.
The death toll in Israel is nearly 1,200, according to official Israeli figures. (Antara)
