ASIATODAY.ID, PAPUA – A major fire occurred on the cruise ship The Oceanik, a ship carrying 23 domestic and foreign tourists in the sea waters of Mansuar Island, Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua, Friday afternoon at around 13.15 WIT.
Head of the Sorong Search and Rescue Agency, said that information about the ship fire began with a report from an employee of the Sorong Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
“The pinisi type cruise ship is carrying 23 tourists, with details of 10 foreign tourists, 5 Indonesian tourists and 8 crew members,” explained Amirudin.
There were no casualties in this incident. The tourists and crew of The Oceanik have now been evacuated by the Raja Ampat Joint Search and Rescue Team. Meanwhile, the phinisi ship The Oceanik has been evacuated to the outskirts of the island. The passengers were reported to have suffered no major or minor injuries.
The Raja Ampat Resort Police have questioned eight crew members of The Oceanik to find out the cause of the incident.
Raja Ampat Resort Police Chief, AKBP Edwin Parsaoran, who was contacted on Saturday, said that, based on information from the ship’s captain, the fire came from the engine room.
“The fire occurred when one of the crew members of The Oceanik was refueling in the engine room and at that time a spark occurred,” explained Edwin. (AT Network)
