East Kolaka Hit by 254 Earthquakes, What’s Going on?

ASIATODAY.ID, KENDARI – The Kendari Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency recorded that 254 aftershocks occurred in East Kolaka Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province, from 24 to 31 January 2025.

According to the Head of the Kendari Geophysics Station, Rudin, the earthquake in the area was a series of main earthquakes that occurred on Friday, January 24 with a magnitude of 4.9.

“After that there were 254 aftershocks,” said Rudin when contacted in Kendari, Friday, January 31, 2025.

He said that on January 24 2025 there were three aftershocks, then on January 25 there were 29 earthquakes, after that on January 26 2025 there were 15 aftershocks, and on the 27th there were two earthquakes.

“Furthermore, on January 28 2025 there were 53 aftershocks, on January 29 there were 98 aftershocks, on January 30 there were 37 times, and on January 31 until 11.00 WITA there were 17 aftershocks,” he said.

Rudin explained that of the hundreds of earthquakes that occurred, there were 31 aftershocks that were felt in several other areas around East Kolaka Regency. Even the largest today with a magnitude of 5.1.

“The majority of earthquakes were caused by tectonic activity in shallow areas centered in Lalolae District, with the smallest magnitude being 1.2 and the largest being 5.1,” he said. (ANT)
