ASIATODAY. ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia proclaimed its independence on August 17 1945. On Saturday, August 17, 2024 today, the country celebrates the 79th Anniversary of Independence.
After the proclamation of Indonesian independence was read by Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta (first president and vice president), the diplomatic struggle to gain international recognition became an important step in developing this country.
Just to note, there are two important elements that must be fulfilled in establishing a state, namely constitutive and declarative elements.
The constitutive elements consist of territory, population and government, while the declarative elements are recognition from other countries.
To fulfill this declarative element, Indonesia’s diplomatic struggle to gain recognition of independence from other countries was intensively carried out.
The following are the first 7 countries to recognize Indonesian independence;
1. Egypt
Recognition Date: March 22, 19462.
2. India
Date of Recognition: September 2, 19463.
3. Syria
Date of Recognition: July 2, 19474.
4. Vatican
Date of Recognition: July 6, 19475.
5. Iraq
Recognition Date: July 16, 19476.
6. Lebanon
Recognition Date: July 29, 1947
7. Afghanistan
Recognition Date: September 23, 1947
The Indonesian government also stated that Palestine was one of the countries that recognized Indonesia’s independence from the start.
Palestinian support for Indonesian sovereignty has actually been conveyed since before the proclamation of Indonesian independence, to be precise on September 6 1944.
This recognition was disseminated throughout the world by the great mufti of Palestine, Sheikh Muhammad Amin Al-Husaini. However, Palestine at that time was under British mandate and had not officially become an independent state. (AT Network)
