ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – PT Pertamina (Persero), as one of the Cooperation Contract Contractors (KKKS) in Indonesia has implemented Carbon Capture Storage (CCS)/Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology by injecting CO2 in the Pertamina EP Field Sukowati, Bojonegoro, East Java, using the Huff & Puff method which was carried out on Thursday, December 7 2023.

Previously, Pertamina successfully carried out the first CO2 injection at Jatibarang Field.

The Director General of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Tutuka Ariadji, said that the huff & puff method provides confirmation and validation regarding EOR technology specifically at the well scale, so it is hoped that it can also be applied in other oil and gas fields that are currently actively carrying out activities. CO2-EOR study.

He appreciates the CO2 injection carried out by Pertamina and hopes that it will run well and can be a lesson for the development of CCS/CCUS in Indonesia.

“CCUS technology is an enabler capable of increasing oil and gas production through CO2-EOR while reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly. The Sukowati field will be an example in the future with a large CO2 capacity. We hope that the implementation of CCUS in Sukowati can be successful and can be a lesson for development CCUS in other fields,” explained Tutuka.

A total of 500 tonnes of CO2 was injected into the Sukowati-18 (SKW-18) well for 7 days. The application of CCUS technology is expected to increase field production through the application of CO2 EOR.

Pertamina’s SVP Research and Technology Innovation, Oki Muraza, emphasized that the implementation of CO2 injection using the Huff & Puff method in the Sukowati Field will provide confirmation and validation regarding specific EOR technology.

“The aim of CO2 injection in Pertamina’s second field is to study the effects of CO2 EOR and CO2 storage in subsurface formations for oil and gas fields. It is hoped that the results of this study can be applied to other Pertamina fields which are currently actively carrying out CO2-EOR study activities, which of course “will support the achievement of the target of 1 million BOPD by 2030,” said Oki.

Director of Development & Production of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Awang Lazuardi said that in the future, when fully implemented, the Sukowati Field CCUS will use CO2 sourced from the Jambaran Tiung Biru Field.

“We welcome a new era, one of which is CCUS for oil and gas EOR. This will be beneficial for future business. We hope that the results can be evaluated and continued to the full implementation stage with CO2 sources from Jambaran Tiung Biru. With CO2-EOR innovation, it is hoped that it can encourage improvements Sukowati production,” explained Awang.

The CCUS achievements in the Sukowati Field are the result of a joint study between Pertamina, the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and Japan Petroleum Exploration Company Limited (JAPEX) which is a follow-up to the Joint Study Agreement between the parties which was signed in July 2023.

Indonesia has great potential in CCS/CCUS and in order to capture this opportunity, apart from the Ajibarang and Sukowati Fields, there are still 13 other CCS/CCUS projects being worked on in Indonesia, spread across all regions in Indonesia, located from Sumatra to Papua, some of which are Large targeted onstream in 2030.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has issued regulations in the form of Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No. 2 of 2023 concerning the Implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage, as well as Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage in Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities.

This regulation covers activities including: capture, transport, injection, storage and use. Currently the Ministerial Regulation focuses only on activities in oil and gas working areas.

Then other regulations are also being prepared, namely the Draft Presidential Regulation on CCS outside oil and gas activities. The Draft Presidential Decree will regulate Business Licensing for Exploration Permits & Carbon Storage Operation Permits. (AT Network)
