ASIATODAY.ID, LIMA – The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, held a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, on the sidelines of the APEC Summit which took place at the Lima Convention Center (LCC), Peru, Friday, November 15 2024.
During the bilateral meeting, the two leaders emphasized their commitment to enhancing cooperative relations between the two countries, including through strengthening trade and collaboration in strategic sectors.
President Prabowo started the meeting by expressing his appreciation for the good relations that have existed between Indonesia and Canada.
Currently, the two countries have completed negotiations on the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA CEPA) and this agreement is ready to be implemented by both countries.
“Canada has had very good relations with Indonesia for decades. We want to strengthen this relationship. “I think we have completed CEPA,” said President Prabowo, quoted from a BPMI broadcast.
President Prabowo also highlighted areas of cooperation that the two countries could develop further, ranging from fisheries, manufacturing, to renewable energy.
“Indonesia is very ambitious. “We have many energy resources outside fossil fuels,” said President Prabowo.
Meanwhile, PM Trudeau also praised President Prabowo’s leadership. He appreciated Indonesia’s contribution in facing various global challenges.
“Congratulations on your extraordinary leadership over the past few months. “Indonesia has taken on many big challenges in a very positive way,” said PM Trudeau.
PM Trudeau also announced the good news about the signing of a free trade agreement between Indonesia and Canada. According to PM Trudeau, the agreement will provide many benefits for Indonesia and Canada.
“This is good news for our economy, for growth, for prosperity, for workers and for the business world,” said PM Trudeau.
Apart from strengthening trade relations, PM Trudeau also highlighted various potential collaborations, including in the critical minerals, education, energy and digital technology sectors.
He also announced plans to lead Canada’s largest trade mission to Indonesia in the near future.
“Many Canadian businesses are very enthusiastic about this opportunity,” said PM Trudeau.
Also accompanying President Prabowo at the meeting were Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Trade Budi Santoso, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Special Advisor to the President for National Defense Dudung Abdurachman, and Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia in Lima Ricky Suhendar.
