Indonesia and Tanzania Agree to Expand Cooperation between the Two Countries

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo (Jokowi) received an official visit from the President of the United Republic of Tanzania Samia Suluhu Hassan, at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, Thursday, January 25 2024. During the meeting, Indonesia and Tanzania agreed to strengthen cooperation in various fields.

In the bilateral meeting between President Jokowi and the President of Tanzania, President Jokowi invited the presence and participation of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania Samia Suluhu Hassan in organizing the Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) II in 2024.

The President called the holding of IAF II 2024 an opportunity to strengthen South-South Cooperation, especially concrete economic cooperation. Indonesia will hold IAF II 2024, where Tanzania’s participation is highly expected.

Apart from that, the President also expressed his appreciation for President Samia’s visit, which he saw as a reflection of the increasingly strong relations between Indonesia and Tanzania which could provide benefits to the people of both countries.

President Samia’s visit this time was to fulfill an invitation as well as a response to President Jokowi’s visit to Tanzania in August 2023. In his statement, President Samia expressed his appreciation for the invitation and warm welcome given to the Tanzanian delegation.

According to President Samia, this visit opens up opportunities for the two countries to further expand cooperation and collaboration for the mutual benefit of both countries and their people.

In the meeting between the two countries, the two Heads of State agreed to strengthen concrete cooperation in various fields, ranging from trade, investment, human resource (HR) development, to health.

In the trade sector, President Jokowi said that the two countries agreed to start negotiations on the formation of a preferential trade agreement (PTA) to increase trade and launch the negotiations in 2024.

Regarding investment, the two countries are committed to strengthening cooperation in the oil and gas sector. President Jokowi stated that the state-owned company (BUMN) from Indonesia, PT Pertamina (Persero) had expanded cooperation in the Mnazi Bay oil and gas block and conducted training for employees of the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC). In the future, Indonesia hopes that negotiations between Medco Energi for LNG cooperation and SSA (Sinka Sinye Agrotama) investment plans in the fertilizer sector can be realized soon.

President Jokowi also conveyed the importance of establishing a bilateral investment treaty to protect investment between the two countries.

In the field of development cooperation, President Jokowi said that Indonesia is committed to increasing cooperation in increasing human resource capacity and implementing digital-based systems. This is done through increasing cooperation in revitalizing the Farmer’s Agriculture and Rural Training Center (FARTC) in Morogoro, training human resources in the fields of oil and gas, agriculture, and implementing the National Single System.

In the health sector, President Jokowi said that the two countries would strengthen cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector. President Jokowi said that Indonesian pharmaceutical companies were committed to meeting medical needs in Tanzania. So the importance of intensive exploration between BPOM of the Republic of Indonesia and the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority has been conveyed to accelerate the registration of pharmaceutical products.

Regarding South-South Cooperation, President Jokowi also expressed his hope for Tanzania’s participation in IAF II 2024 which will be implemented in 2024 to strengthen South-South Cooperation, where Tanzania is one of the main partners. (AT Network)
