ASIATODAY.ID, WASHINGTON – An Indonesian government delegation, led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, held a high-level meeting with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. This meeting marked a significant step in strengthening trade relations between Indonesia and the United States.
Following the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump on July 7, 2025, Indonesia became one of the first countries to be received by the U.S. Government to discuss the continuation of tariff agreements—demonstrating both nations’ strong commitment to maintaining stable trade relations.
During the meeting, Minister Airlangga expressed his appreciation for the constructive negotiation process that has taken place with the U.S. Delegations discussed a wide range of issues including tariffs, non-tariff barriers, the digital economy, economic security, and broader commercial and investment cooperation.
Indonesia and the U.S. agreed to intensify tariff negotiations over the next three weeks to ensure a mutually beneficial outcome.
“We now share a common understanding with the U.S. regarding the progress of these negotiations. Moving forward, we will continue to work towards finalizing an agreement based on the principle of mutual benefit,” said Minister Airlangga.
He also emphasized the importance of Indonesia–U.S. relations, which he described as longstanding and strong.
“We aim to enhance Indonesia’s commercial relations with the U.S. Just last week, Indonesian companies in the agriculture and energy sectors signed MoUs with U.S. firms to purchase key American products and boost investment,” he added.
Both nations also recognized significant potential for expanding cooperation in strategic sectors, particularly critical minerals.
“The U.S. has shown strong interest in strengthening partnerships in the area of critical minerals. Indonesia holds vast reserves of nickel, copper, and cobalt, and we must optimize the potential for downstream cooperation in these resources,” Minister Airlangga noted.
Indonesia is committed to continuing negotiations with the U.S. in good faith, ensuring that any resulting cooperation will provide tangible benefits for both countries. (AT Network)
