ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries together with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (UNESCO-IOC) and the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission (DG MARE) held a “Marine Spatial (MSP) Forum” 6th in Bali.
This year’s event is the first time the MSP Forum has been held in an Asian country, after previously being held on the European Continent.
This international Marine Spatial Planning Forum will be held from 8 – 11 October 2024 at the Merusaka Hotel, Nusa Dua, Bali. This meeting will be a forum for discussion and sharing of information among stakeholders regarding experiences in formulating policies and strategies for sustainable marine space management in various countries.
“We should be proud that Indonesia is the first place to hold this forum outside Europe. “Representing Indonesia, we will share information and experience in sustainable marine space management with the Blue Economy,” said the Director General of Marine and Marine Space Management, Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Victor Gustaaf Manoppo in a written statement quoted on Wednesday, October 9 2024.
The MSP Forum will be attended by 115 participants from 51 countries consisting of various elements and coming from various continents, from governments, NGOs, to private sector business actors. Through this meeting, practitioners are expected to discuss and produce recommendations for strengthening marine spatial planning related to the 3 thematic pillars promoted this year.
This year’s theme is in line with the efforts made by the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in sustainable management of marine and fisheries resources. One of them is by implementing good marine spatial planning in Indonesia.
Not only issuing regulations, good marine spatial planning in Indonesia is also supported by the presence of a marine resources balance sheet.
“This meeting will also be an opportunity to share information on experiences related to MSP implementation at the global level, such as the implementation of Ocean Big Data and Ocean Accounting,” said Victor.
For information, the Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) Forum is an international forum which is a forum for practitioners to gather to discuss marine space management which has been held consistently since 2018. The MSP Forum was previously held in Belgium, France, Vigo, Latvia and Barcelona.
In this event, which will be held until 11 October, various topics related to marine spatial planning will be discussed, such as cross-sector integration in marine spatial planning, starting from implementing an ecosystem-based approach, to stakeholder involvement in marine spatial planning.
