ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia has strengthened its defense diplomacy by approving new cooperation frameworks with Malaysia and Türkiye, marking a significant step toward enhancing regional security, defense capabilities, and strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific.
The House of Representatives (DPR) approved two bills on the ratification of defense cooperation agreements with Malaysia and Türkiye during its 26th Plenary Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 2025–2026 Legislative Year in Jakarta on Tuesday (21/7/2026).
Deputy Chairman of the DPR Commission I Anton Sukartono Suratto said the agreements reflect Indonesia’s commitment to expanding defense cooperation while contributing to regional stability amid changing geopolitical dynamics.
“Defense cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia, as well as Indonesia and Türkiye, is highly strategic in strengthening geopolitical stability, promoting defense industry technology transfer, and enhancing the capacity of defense personnel,” Anton said.
The agreements were previously approved at the first-level discussion by the DPR Commission I and the government on July 1, 2026, with all factions reaching a consensus to proceed with the ratification process.
The cooperation with Malaysia is expected to further enhance security collaboration between neighboring Southeast Asian countries, while the partnership with Türkiye provides opportunities for broader cooperation in defense technology, joint training, and human resource development.
Beyond military cooperation, the agreements are also expected to support Indonesia’s efforts to build a stronger and more resilient defense industry through technology exchange, capacity building, and international collaboration.
Anton emphasized that effective implementation of the agreements will require consistent oversight, sustainable financing, and strategic planning to ensure that all commitments are translated into concrete outcomes.
“Strong, targeted, and sustainable budget support is essential to fulfill these commitments, including strengthening defense capabilities through comprehensive and integrated training programs,” he said.
Indonesia has continued to expand defense partnerships with strategic countries as it seeks to strengthen national resilience and contribute to a stable security environment in the Indo-Pacific.
