ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Industry said that Indonesia is the world’s largest exporter of processed rattan with a total transaction value currently reaching US$158.5 million or equivalent to 42.2 percent of the global processed rattan export value.
“Currently Indonesia is the world’s largest exporter of processed rattan, amounting to US$158.5 million or around 42.2 percent of the world’s processed rattan export value of US$375.6 million, followed by China and Vietnam,” said Director General of Agro Industry Putu Juli. Indonesia is the source of 80 percent of the world’s rattan, 90 percent of which comes from natural forests and 10 percent from cultivation.
He noted that there are a total of eight genera and 306 types of rattan in Indonesia, but only 28 types have been used commercially. Realizing this, said Putu, the government is committed to continuing to spur the growth and contribution of the rattan industry to the economy.
One of them is by handing over 12 units of rattan processing machines to the Technical Implementation Unit of the Hampangen Rattan Service, Katingan Regency, Central Kalimantan.
He said that the assistance with machines and equipment was part of improving the supply chain of the furniture and crafts industry to overcome the problem of scarcity of raw materials faced.
“By providing ready-to-use raw materials, industry can obtain raw materials according to type, quality, size or specifications, quantity needed and clear prices. In this way, industry can reduce the lead time of the raw material preparation process so that industry can focus on completing orders from buyers ,” he said.
Based on data from the Ministry of Industry in 2023, the average production volume of the national rattan furniture industry is 284,800 tons per month.
Meanwhile, the average production volume of the rattan processing industry is 17,600 tons per month. (ATN)
