ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing international cooperation in the fields of environmental protection and sustainable economic development.
The Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, received a courtesy visit from the Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rut Kruger Giverin, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, June, 4, 2015. The meeting marked a significant milestone in deepening the strategic partnership between Indonesia and Norway, especially ahead of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025.
During the talks, Minister Sugiono and Ambassador Giverin discussed efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation on environmental issues, particularly in addressing climate change and marine plastic pollution. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the global agenda for sustainable development that safeguards the planet for future generations.
In addition to environmental cooperation, the meeting explored opportunities to enhance bilateral trade and investment through the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between Indonesia and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Norway is a member. The agreement is expected to pave the way for green investment initiatives and expand sustainable trade links between the two nations.
Minister Sugiono also expressed Indonesia’s interest in expanding collaboration with Norway in the clean energy sector, particularly the development of hydropower plants (PLTA). With over 90% of Norway’s electricity generated from hydropower, the country offers valuable expertise to support Indonesia’s clean energy targets under the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) 2025–2030.
Strengthening cooperation in national food security was also a key agenda. Both nations recognized that global challenges such as the food crisis and climate change must be addressed through strong and innovative international partnerships.
As part of the upcoming 75th anniversary of Indonesia–Norway diplomatic relations, to be commemorated on January 25, 2025, both countries have agreed to adopt the Joint Declaration on “Partnership for a Prosperous and Sustainable Future.”
This declaration sets out a strategic framework for enhancing cooperation in key sectors including green economy, international trade, clean energy, food security, and education. (AT Network)
