ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto announced Indonesia’s official decision to join as a member of the New Development Bank (NDB) in a meeting with NDB President Dilma Vana Rousseff at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. This decision marks Indonesia’s strategic step in strengthening development partnerships with developing countries and multilateral institutions.
President Prabowo explained that the meeting between the two parties took place in a warm and productive atmosphere, discussing the direction of Indonesia’s short, medium, and long-term development. In addition, the meeting also discussed opportunities for concrete cooperation in various priority sectors.
“We have had a very good meeting, an intensive and broad discussion. We discussed the plans and programs of the Indonesian government for the long, medium, and short term,” said President Prabowo.
One of the main points in the discussion was the official invitation from the NDB to Indonesia to join as a member. President Prabowo stated that after going through an evaluation by the Ministry of Finance team, the Indonesian government had decided to accept the invitation.
“The Indonesian government has decided to join the New Development Bank and follow the procedures and requirements that have been given to us,” President Prabowo stressed.
Furthermore, President Prabowo expressed his hope that Indonesia’s membership in the NDB could accelerate the transformation of national development.
“I think this new multilateral development bank can be a strong driver to accelerate our transformation strategy,” he said.
Meanwhile, NDB President Dilma Rousseff welcomed Indonesia’s decision to join. According to Rousseff, Indonesia is an important country in the region and the world, and has the same vision as the NDB in supporting sustainable development in developing countries.
“Indonesia is a very important country in the region, in the world, and for the BRICS Bank. Because we are a developing country in an emerging market, and it is important for us to build an alliance like this,” he said.
Rousseff also appreciated Indonesia’s development planning which she considered clear and long-term. Rousseff said that Indonesia and the NDB have the same priorities in the investment sector, including infrastructure, logistics, roads, railways, ports, airports, to digital connectivity and energy transition. She specifically praised Indonesia’s achievements in the use of biofuels.
“Indonesia is a country that is leading in biofuels such as biodiesel with an achievement of 40%. I am very impressed with this,” he said. Rousseff also emphasized that the NDB is a development institution that respects the sovereignty of member countries and focuses on the national needs and priorities of each country. Rousseff also emphasized that all NDB members will welcome Indonesia’s decision.
