ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK – Indonesia urges non-aligned movement countries to play a role in helping Palestine.
“Non-Aligned Movement countries must use their influence to help Palestine,” emphasized Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi at the Ministerial Level Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement Committee for Palestine, at UN Headquarters, New York, 26 September 2024.
According to Retno, Non-Aligned Movement countries must take advantage of the influence they have, to advance two main things, namely first, increasing the number of countries that recognize Palestine; and second, pushing for the effective implementation of UN General Assembly Resolution ES-10/24, which demands that Israel end its illegal presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
“Recognition of Palestine is very important. “Recognition of rekindling hope in the Palestinian people is a crucial step towards creating a Two-State Solution, as well as creating political pressure for Israel to stop its atrocities,” explained Retno.
In Minister Retno’s view, the Non-Aligned Movement countries must be the leading countries in recognizing Palestine.
The Palestine Committee of the Non-Aligned Movement is one of the Working Groups of the Non-Aligned Movement whose members include Indonesia, Algeria, Iran, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malaysia, Cuba, India, Venezuela, Egypt and Senegal.
The Non-Aligned Movement consists of 121 countries that are not formally aligned with any particular major power bloc. Of the member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement, only Palestine has not achieved independence.
Implementation of UNGA Resolution ES-10/24
On that occasion, Retno also firmly expressed the importance of recognizing the State of Palestine as a crucial step in realizing a two-state solution.
He emphasized that this recognition not only gives hope to the Palestinian people, but is also an important way to put political pressure on Israel to stop atrocities.
Minister Retno rejected the views of several countries that were delaying recognizing Palestine on the grounds that they were waiting for the “right time”.
“When is the right time? For me, the time is now. We don’t want to wait until all the Palestinian people have been expelled or until 100,000 people have been killed to think that it is the right time,” he stressed.
Apart from that, Minister Retno also highlighted the urgency of implementing UN General Assembly Resolution ES-10/24, which demands Israel to end its illegal presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
He emphasized that hopes for peace would be destroyed if UN member countries did not have the courage and heart to pressure one country to comply with the resolution.
“Indonesia urges all countries to ensure that the implementation of the resolution actually occurs,” he added. (AT Network)
