ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia has issued a strong warning over escalating attacks against commercial vessels in the Red Sea, saying the violence threatens global trade flows, maritime security and the stability of one of the world’s most important shipping corridors.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned attacks targeting commercial ships sailing in international waters, stressing that such actions violate international law and endanger the safety of global maritime transportation.
“Indonesia condemns attacks against commercial ships sailing in international waters in the Red Sea. Such actions contradict international law, including the principle of freedom of navigation, and threaten shipping safety, international trade and regional stability,” Indonesian MoFA said in an official statement.
The statement followed renewed attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea, including incidents involving tanker ships, which have intensified concerns over security along a vital route connecting Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
The Red Sea remains a strategic artery for global commerce, linking the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. Disruptions in the region could increase shipping costs, extend delivery routes and create new pressures on international supply chains.
Indonesia Calls for De-escalation
Jakarta urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions.
“Indonesia calls on all parties to refrain from actions that could increase escalation and to respect international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as the foundation for maintaining maritime security and freedom of navigation,” the ministry stated.
Indonesia emphasized that the security of international waterways is essential not only for regional peace but also for the stability of the global economy.
Supporting Peace in Yemen
Regarding the ongoing conflict in Yemen, Indonesia reaffirmed its support for a peaceful political solution through an inclusive process facilitated by the United Nations.
Jakarta supports a “Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned” political process while respecting Yemen’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
Jakarta’s Maritime Message to the World
As the world’s largest archipelagic nation and a key maritime country, Indonesia has consistently promoted the importance of open, safe and secure sea lanes.
The Red Sea crisis highlights the growing connection between geopolitics and global economic security, as disruptions in strategic waterways can quickly affect energy supplies, logistics networks and international trade.
Through its latest statement, Indonesia reaffirmed its position that respect for international law and multilateral cooperation are critical to preventing further instability in global maritime routes. (AT Network)
