ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia is carrying out a full investigation into the explosion incident that occurred at the PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) smelter operating in the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), Morowali, Central Sulawesi, on December 24, 2023.
“I ask us to be firm in this investigation. There is no need to hesitate, if someone needs to be punished, then just be punished. “So that things like this don’t happen again in the future,” stressed Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Monday, January 15 2024.
Luhut emphasized this when chairing a coordination meeting which was attended by the Minister of Manpower, Minister of Industry, TNI Commander Waaster, Central Sulawesi Regional Police Chief, Pangdam XIII/Merdeka and other stakeholders. This meeting was a follow-up meeting to the first coordination meeting held on December 28 last year.
On that occasion, Luhut also gave instructions to the Police together with the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Manpower to carry out inspections of labor compliance and regulations. Not only for the ITSS smelter, but also for all other smelters, and will not hesitate to take action if there are violations.
“I ask that the handling of this case must be carried out in an integrated manner, all Ministries/Institutions must support each other. We have to show that we do need investment, but they have to comply with existing regulations in our country. “Don’t ignore these rules,” he added.
On the same occasion, the Minister of Manpower, Ida Fauziyah, stated that there were strong indications of violations of SOPs and negligence in implementing K3 requirements which resulted in work accidents in the form of explosions and furnace fires.
“We suggest that in the investigation process carried out by the Police, apart from using the Criminal Code, they can include the Employment Law, to provide a deterrent effect to companies so that criminal responsibility can also be imposed on the corporation,” he said.
In his report, Central Sulawesi Regional Police Chief Inspector General Pol Agus Nugroho said that his party had improved the status of case handling from the investigation stage to the investigation stage, summoning and examining witnesses to the incident, as well as confiscating evidence.
“The follow-up plan for the investigators is to examine forensic expert witnesses and employment expert witnesses, coordinate with the International Relations Division and the Chinese Embassy for the case title, coordinate with the Public Prosecutor, and coordinate with the company,” he concluded.
