ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia is taking a major step toward strengthening energy security and advancing industrial transformation as US-based technology company Latitude Energy signs a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Danantara Indonesia to explore the development of the country’s first coal gasification project.

The agreement, signed on July 8 in Jakarta through PT Danantara Development Management Fund, marks a significant milestone in US–Indonesia economic and energy cooperation, opening the door for the deployment of advanced coal conversion technology in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

Under the partnership, Latitude Energy will explore the application of Transport Integrated Gasification (TRIG™) technology, an advanced coal gasification system designed to convert coal into synthetic gas (syngas) for potential use in industrial applications and domestic energy development.

The initiative supports Indonesia’s broader strategy to enhance energy resilience, reduce reliance on imported energy sources, and create greater value from its abundant natural resources through downstream industrial development.

Turning Indonesia’s Coal Resources into Higher-Value Energy

Indonesia, one of the world’s largest coal producers, has significant potential to transform its coal resources into higher-value energy products through advanced conversion technologies.

Sigit P. Santosa, Chief Executive Officer of PT Danantara Development Management Fund, said the partnership aligns with Indonesia’s efforts to achieve greater energy independence by optimizing domestic coal resources, including low-calorie coal.

“Advanced technology partnerships are essential to developing Indonesia’s industrial capacity and creating long-term economic value from domestic resources,” he said.

Latitude Energy said Indonesia represents a strategic market and a potential regional hub for future coal gasification development in Southeast Asia.

“By combining Indonesia’s abundant domestic resources with Latitude’s TRIG™ technology, we are committed to bringing advanced US technology to Indonesia, developing local capabilities, and creating long-term value for Indonesia’s downstream industries,” said Jacob Thomas, President and Chief Executive Officer of Latitude Energy Holdings Inc.

Strengthening US–Indonesia Strategic Economic Ties

The MoU reflects growing cooperation between the United States and Indonesia in strategic sectors, particularly energy technology, investment, and industrial development.

Joy M. Sakurai, Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Jakarta, said advanced US energy technology could contribute to Indonesia’s energy security, industrial growth, and long-term economic prosperity.

The partnership also highlights Indonesia’s ambition to accelerate downstream industrialization by maximizing domestic resources while attracting international technology and investment.

As Indonesia continues to pursue energy security and industrial competitiveness, the coal gasification initiative could become a key component in developing alternative energy pathways and strengthening the country’s role in the Indo-Pacific energy landscape. (AT Network)
