ASIATODAY.ID, YERUSALEM – The situation within Israel is starting to become volatile.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to step down immediately without waiting until the end of the war against the Palestinian militia group Hamas.
“Netanyahu must leave immediately. We need change, Netanyahu cannot remain prime minister. “We cannot allow ourselves to be under a prime minister who has lost the trust of the people,” said Lapid in an interview with Israeli news channel N12, Wednesday, November 15, 2023
Four days after Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on October 7, Netanyahu and another opposition leader, Benny Gantz, announced an agreement to form an emergency government for the duration of the war.
Lapid said at the time that he would not join, and accused Israel’s leaders of an unpardonable failure by not preventing the attack.
Lapid, who led Israel’s coalition government before Netanyahu returned to power in elections last year, has not called on the prime minister to resign since the Gaza war broke out.
In his interview with N12, Lapid did not call for early elections, but rather a vote of no confidence in parliament that would allow the formation of a new government led by another member of Netanyahu’s Likud party.
“This is not the time to hold elections. “We must choose national reconstruction with another prime minister from the Likud Party,” he said.
In a statement posted to Telegram, the Likud Party immediately rejected the call, saying such a proposal in wartime was shameful. (ATN)
