ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) announced that there has been an increase in activity from the crater of Mount Bromo Volcano in the form of puffs of gray crater smoke, medium to thick intensity, with moderately strong pressure from inside the crater of Mount Bromo.
These results are visual observations of PVMBG on December 13 2023 at 06.00 West Indonesia Time. Meanwhile, during observations several months earlier, white crater smoke was observed blowing from the crater with light to thick intensity, weak – moderate pressure with heights ranging from 50 – 900 meters from the peak.
Earthquake observations show that continuous vibrations with an amplitude of 0.5 – 1 mm (dominant 0.5 mm) are still recorded, accompanied by the recording of Volcanic Earthquakes in 3 incidents during December. “This shows that there is a pressure freezing process within the body of Mount Bromo which is accompanied by fluid flow to the surface,” explained Head of PVMBG Hendra Gunawan in Bandung, quoted from a press release, Thursday, December 14 2023.
Indicators of increased volcanic activity can also be seen from observations using Borehole Tiltmeter and Tiltmeter equipment, showing a pattern of inflationary tendencies or increasing pressure around the body of Mount Bromo during this month of December.
Mount Bromo is a cinder cone volcano located in the Tengger Caldera with a height of 2329 meters above sea level. Administratively, this volcano is included in the Probolinggo Regency, Malang Regency, Pasuruan Regency, and Lumajang Regency, East Java Province.
The eruption character of Mount Bromo is in the form of explosive and effusive eruptions from the central crater. The eruption produces ash, sand, lapilli, and sometimes emits incandescent lava and volcanic bombs. The last eruption occurred in July 2019 in the form of a phreatic eruption without being preceded by a significant increase in seismicity.
The potential danger that could arise due to the increased activity of Mount Bromo’s crater is the occurrence of phreatic or magmatic eruptions with the distribution of eruptive material in the form of ash and thrown stones (incandescence) which can reach a radius of 1 km from the center of the crater, as well as the release of gases that are dangerous to life.
Based on the results of a comprehensive evaluation, the activity level of Mount Bromo on December 13 2023 at 08.00 WIB is still at Level Il (Alert) with recommendations adjusted to the latest potential danger threats, namely that the community around Mount Bromo and visitors/tourists/climbers do not enter the crater area. within a radius of 1 km from the active crater of Mount Bromo,” concluded Hendra.
