ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Mount Ibu which is located in the northwest of Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province, Indonesia experienced an eruption and spewed thick gray volcanic ash as high as approximately 1,000 meters to the southwest and west.
The eruption occurred at 08.56 WIT, Friday, January 5 2024.
Mount Ibu is a strato volcano type volcano which has a height of 1,325 meters above sea level, located in the northwest of Halmahera Island, North Maluku.
The top of the mountain is a volcanic crater. The center of the crater is 1 kilometer wide and 400 meters deep, while the outer part is 1.2 kilometers wide.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) recommends that people around Mount Ibu not carry out activities within a radius of 2 kilometers and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of the volcano’s active crater.
If ash falls, people who do activities outside the home are advised to use nose, mouth (mask) and eye protection (goggles).
On January 4 2024, in the period from 00.00 to 24.00 WIT, PVMBG recorded hundreds of earthquakes that occurred due to magmatic activity on Mount Ibu.
There were 21 earthquake eruptions recorded, 33 gust earthquakes, 4 harmonic earthquakes, 82 volcanic earthquakes, 1 deep volcanic earthquake, 1 tectonic earthquake, and 11 distant tectonic earthquakes. (AT Network)
