ASIATODAY.ID, KUPANG – The eruption of the Lewotobi Volcano in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara has displaced thousands of residents from several villages.
Currently, the refugees are still unable to return to their homes because the eruption accompanied by hot clouds of avalanches continues to occur in a fluctuating manner.
The East Flores Regional Disaster Management Agency recorded that the number of residents who were displaced reached 6,311 people.
“The temporary data for evacuees from the eruption of Mount Lewotobi as of Monday, January 22 2024 reached 6,311 people,” said a written statement issued by the East Flores Regency Main Evacuation Post at the Ilebura District Office.
Residents were forced to flee, because their village was in the red zone or a disaster-prone location because it was very close to Mount Lewotobi, which is less than 5 kilometers away.
The refugees were spread across several points, including refugee tents, residents’ homes, and public facilities such as schools, community health centers, village offices and sub-district offices.
“There are 1,340 men, 1,228 women, 28 babies, 138 toddlers, 13 pregnant women, 45 breastfeeding mothers, 311 elderly people, and 32 people with disabilities,” wrote the Main Refugee Command Post.
Meanwhile, 3,683 people fled to the homes of residents and other relatives spread across 32 villages in East Flores Regency and 3 villages in Sikka Regency.
In detailed data at the Refugee Command Post, the residents who fled to residents’ homes were 1,721 men, 1,962 women, 34 babies, 222 toddlers, 5 pregnant women, 18 breastfeeding mothers, 338 elderly people, and 3 people with disabilities soul.
The data also stated that there were 13 types of diseases that attacked refugees with a total of 4,840 cases reported from health posts at two evacuation points.
Most of the refugees experienced respiratory infections (ARI), which reached 2,201 cases, followed by other diseases, namely Dermatitis 431 cases, Myalgia 269 cases, Gastritis 237 cases, and Dyspepsia 238 cases.
The Acting Regent of East Flores, Doris Alexander Rihi, said that the basic needs that refugees need most are logistics and medicine.
