“For seismic observations, there were 16 earthquake eruptions or eruptions with an amplitude of 12-23 mm, and an earthquake duration of 77-145 seconds,” said Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA) officer, Ghufron Alwi, Wednesday, December 27 2023.

Ghufron said that the earthquake avalanches occurred five times with an amplitude of 3-6 mm and an earthquake duration of 40-74 seconds. Then there were 8 gusts of earthquakes with an amplitude of 6-7 mm, and an earthquake duration of 51-60 seconds.

“There were 9 harmonic tremor earthquakes with an amplitude of 2-12 mm, and the earthquake duration was 225-723 seconds. Furthermore, there were 7 distant tectonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 7-30 mm, S-P 17-59 seconds and an earthquake duration of 51-150 seconds,” he explained. .

With volcanic activity still high on the highest mountain on the island of Java, its status is still at alert level III, as of Wednesday morning.

“Semeru Volcano Activity Level is Level III or alert,” he said.

He asked the public not to carry out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, 13 kilometers from the peak (center of the eruption). Beyond this distance, people do not carry out activities within 500 meters of the river bank or river border along Besuk Kobokan, because they have the potential to be affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 17 kilometers from the peak.

“The public is asked not to do activities within a 5 kilometer radius of the crater or peak of Mount Semeru Volcano because it is prone to the danger of throwing incandescent rocks,” he appealed.

Apart from that, residents are asked to be aware of the potential for hot clouds to fall, lava avalanches and lava along rivers or valleys that originate at the peak of Mount Semeru Volcano.

“Especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar and Besuk Sat, as well as the potential for lava in small rivers which are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan,” he said.

Mount Semeru is a mountain that has a height of 3,676 meters above sea level. The location is between Malang Regency and Lumajang Regency, which is one area of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS).

Previously, on Tuesday, December 26 2023, at around 07.17 WIB, Mount Semeru also emitted volcanic ash. The height of volcanic ash was even observed to reach 4,476 meters from the top of the mountain. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVBMG) also issued a warning to flights due to the distribution of volcanic ash in the air. (AT Network)
