ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – President Prabowo Subianto has issued firm instructions on two strategic fronts: boosting Indonesia’s ownership in PT Freeport Indonesia and accelerating the nation’s renewable energy development.
During a limited cabinet meeting at the Merdeka Palace on Monday, September 15, 2025, Prabowo summoned Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia. The President emphasized that Indonesia must swiftly secure a larger stake in Freeport while ensuring the rapid and large-scale rollout of renewable energy.
“I order the immediate acceleration of Indonesia’s additional shares in Freeport. No delays. We must take full control of our nation’s wealth,” Prabowo instructed, as conveyed by Minister Bahlil.
Bahlil revealed that the initial agreement was for a 10 percent increase in shares, but negotiations have now opened the possibility of securing more.
Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, CEO of Indonesia’s sovereign investment agency Danantara, confirmed that Indonesia is on track to acquire an additional 12 percent stake—at no financial cost to the state.
In parallel, President Prabowo also directed the acceleration of green energy programs, particularly the development of large-scale solar power. The ambitious target: to build up to 100 gigawatts in the coming years.
“Every village must be able to generate 1 to 1.5 gigawatts of solar power. I want this expedited, with strong collaboration between state-owned enterprises, national entrepreneurs, and credible international investors,” Prabowo commanded.
Since 2018, Indonesia has held a majority stake of 51.23 percent in Freeport through MIND ID. With the planned addition of up to 12 percent, Indonesia’s position will become even more dominant in one of the world’s largest copper and gold mining companies.
This directive underscores Prabowo’s clear vision: Indonesia will not only strengthen control over its strategic resources but also lead a decisive leap toward sovereign, clean energy. (AT Network)
