Taiwan Slams Pakistan for Echoing Beijing, Warning of Rising Indo-Pacific Tensions

ASIATODAY.ID, TAIPEI — Geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific escalated sharply after Taiwan issued a strong rebuke of Pakistan for openly endorsing China’s sovereignty claims over Taiwan, accusing Islamabad of acting as a diplomatic mouthpiece for Beijing and undermining regional stability.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) condemned Pakistan for “blindly following China’s political narrative while ignoring objective facts,” following the release of the Joint Press Communiqué of the Seventh Round of the China–Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue, held in Beijing in early January 2026.

“Pakistan is urged not to continue aligning itself with China by disregarding facts or lending legitimacy to aggressive narratives that threaten peace and stability in the region,” MOFA Taiwan said in a sharply worded statement on January 8, 2026.

Taipei emphasized that Taiwan remains a constructive and responsible member of the international community, committed to defending freedom, democracy, and the rules-based international order, while deepening cooperation with democratic partners to counter authoritarian expansion and preserve peace across the Taiwan Strait and the wider Indo-Pacific.

Pakistan Reaffirms ‘One China’, Explicitly Rejects Taiwan’s Sovereignty

The diplomatic backlash followed Pakistan’s unequivocal endorsement of the One China principle, as outlined in the official communiqué issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs after talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.

In the document, Pakistan explicitly stated that:
– Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory
– Islamabad firmly opposes any form of “Taiwan independence”
– It rejects attempts to create “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan”
– Pakistan supports China’s positions on Xinjiang, Tibet (Xizang), Hong Kong, and the South China Sea

The declaration further reinforced the characterization of China and Pakistan as “All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partners”, describing their relationship as one built on “ironclad friendship and strategic mutual trust.”

Deepening Beijing–Islamabad Axis: From Security to Space Cooperation

Beyond Taiwan, the strategic dialogue showcased the rapidly expanding scope of China–Pakistan cooperation. The two sides agreed to intensify collaboration across a wide range of sectors, including:
– Defense and counter-terrorism, with enhanced security coordination
– Economic integration, through the upgrading of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Version 2.0
– Industry, agriculture, and mining development
– Technology, cybersecurity, and vocational education
– Space cooperation, including the anticipated participation of Pakistani astronauts aboard China’s space station

China praised Pakistan’s efforts to protect Chinese personnel and infrastructure projects, while reaffirming support for Islamabad’s role in regional and global multilateral forums such as the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Taiwan: Peace in the Taiwan Strait Is a Global Interest

In response to the growing alignment between Beijing and Islamabad, Taiwan reiterated that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are not internal matters of China, but issues of global strategic importance, given the Strait’s critical role in international trade and supply chains.

Taiwan warned that sustained diplomatic, political, and military pressure from China — compounded by international endorsements — increases the risk of miscalculation and conflict in one of the world’s most strategically sensitive regions.

“Taiwan will continue to work closely with democratic partners to safeguard freedom of navigation, regional stability, and the international rules-based order,” the MOFA statement added.

A Sharpening Global Divide Over Taiwan

Pakistan’s explicit backing of Beijing highlights the deepening polarization in global politics, as countries increasingly align along competing geopolitical blocs.

On one side are democratic nations supporting the maintenance of peace and the status quo in the Taiwan Strait; on the other, states endorsing China’s sovereignty claims and strategic ambitions.

For Taipei, Pakistan’s stance represents more than a bilateral diplomatic disagreement. It is viewed as part of a broader effort by Beijing to expand international legitimacy for its claims over Taiwan and normalize coercive narratives on the global stage.

For China and Pakistan, however, the partnership is framed as a strategic counterweight to Western influence, reinforcing the Belt and Road Initiative and advancing a new geopolitical architecture centered on alternative power structures.

Diplomatic Flashpoint With Global Implications

Taiwan’s sharp condemnation of Pakistan marks a new phase in the escalating diplomatic contest surrounding Taiwan. As China’s network of strategic partners grows more vocal, Taiwan finds itself increasingly at the center of a global struggle between competing visions of international order.

With the China–Pakistan alliance strengthening and Taiwan standing firm alongside democratic partners, the Taiwan Strait is once again emerging as a critical flashpoint in global geopolitics, carrying implications that extend far beyond the Indo-Pacific region. (AT Network)
