ASIATODAY.ID, MEW YORK – The Middle East is once again on edge.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Gutteres has strongly condemned the military escalation following the use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as Iran’s retaliatory actions across the region.

In an official statement issued in New York on February 28, 2026, the UN chief warned that the exchange of attacks is undermining international peace and security and risks dragging the region into a broader and more destructive conflict.

The Secretary-General stressed that all Member States are obligated to comply with international law, including the UN Charter.

The Charter explicitly prohibits:

“The threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”

He emphasized that this principle remains the cornerstone of the post-World War II international order and must be upheld under all circumstances.

Warning of a Wider Regional War

The UN chief cautioned that failure to halt hostilities could ignite a wider regional conflict with grave consequences, particularly for civilians. He underscored that the Middle East — already fragile — cannot afford another full-scale war.

He called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and concrete steps toward de-escalation by all parties involved.

“No Alternative to Peace”

Reaffirming the UN’s long-standing position, the Secretary-General stated that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes in full accordance with international law and the UN Charter.

The statement serves as a direct diplomatic appeal to Washington, Tel Aviv, and Tehran to return to the negotiating table before the crisis spirals further out of control. (AT Network)
