ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK — The United Nations has issued a stark warning as catastrophic floods sweep across South and Southeast Asia.
The UN Secretary-General expressed profound sorrow over the rising death toll, now exceeding 1,000 fatalities across Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. Thousands remain missing, while millions of people are affected as relentless rainfall continues to inundate vast regions.
In his statement, the Secretary-General extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed his solidarity with all communities battling one of the region’s deadliest flood-and-landslide disasters in recent years.
The UN emphasized that it is actively coordinating with national authorities in the four affected countries and stands ready to scale up humanitarian assistance.
UN country teams are on the ground, prepared to provide technical, logistical, and emergency support based on government needs.
“This is not just a local disaster — it is a regional crisis threatening millions of lives,” said Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, in a statement from New York on December 2, 2025.
With extreme rainfall showing no signs of easing, the UN warned that the risk of additional casualties and widespread destruction remains extremely high, urging accelerated mitigation, evacuations, and urgent relief efforts across all impacted areas. (AT Network)
