VinFast Stall on Railway Triggers Deadly Train Crash in Indonesia, 14 Killed

VinFast Stall on Railway Triggers Deadly Train Crash in Indonesia. Special

ASIATODAY.ID, BEKASI – A tragic rail accident in Bekasi Timur, West Java, Indonesia on Monday night, April 27, 2026, has left at least 14 people dead and 84 others injured, following of collisions involving an electric vehicle, a commuter train, and an intercity express.

The incident began at around 8:52–8:57 PM local time at a level crossing near Bekasi Timur Station. A taxi identified as a VinFast VF e34 reportedly stalled on the tracks after experiencing an electrical system failure. The malfunction caused the vehicle’s wheels to lock, preventing it from being moved off the railway in time.

Moments later, a Commuter Line train struck the immobilized vehicle. The situation escalated further when the train came to a stop at Bekasi Timur Station. Shortly afterward, the Argo Bromo Anggrek, traveling from Jakarta’s Gambir Station toward Surabaya, crashed into the rear of the stationary commuter train.

The impact severely damaged the last carriage of the commuter train, trapping passengers inside the wreckage. Emergency responders worked through the night to evacuate victims from the mangled cars.

Authorities confirmed that 14 people were killed, while 84 others sustained injuries and were transported to multiple hospitals across Bekasi for treatment. The deceased have been taken to the National Police Hospital in Kramat Jati for identification.

Indonesia’s state railway operator, Kereta Api Indonesia, stated that all medical expenses for the injured and funeral costs for the deceased will be fully covered. Emergency response and information posts have also been established at Bekasi Timur Station to assist victims’ families.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Sari Yuliati, expressed deep condolences and called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

She urged authorities to examine all possible causes, including technical failures, human error, and operational management issues.

Meanwhile, Lasarus, Chair of Commission V of the House, highlighted the longstanding dangers of level crossings across Indonesia. He noted that thousands of such crossings remain inadequately managed, posing ongoing risks to public safety.

Data indicates that as of 2025, Indonesia still has approximately 3,703 level crossings, with hundreds lacking proper supervision or safety measures.

The crash has also raised broader concerns about the real-world readiness of electric vehicle systems in emergency situations. As of now, VinFast has not issued an official technical explanation regarding the reported malfunction.

This devastating incident underscores critical gaps in transportation safety—from infrastructure and emergency response systems to technological reliability. Without meaningful reforms, experts warn, similar tragedies could occur again. (AT Network)
