ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK – A historic milestone has been set in the United States as Zohran Mamdani, a young Democratic politician, is projected to become the first Muslim Mayor of New York City after a decisive victory in the municipal election held on Tuesday, November 4, local time.

According to data from the Associated Press (AP), with 89 percent of votes counted, Mamdani secured 50.4 percent of the vote, defeating two major rivals — former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, an independent candidate who gained 41.6 percent, and Curtis Sliwa of the Republican Party with 7.1 percent.

With this result, AP has projected Mamdani as the winner and the next Mayor of New York City, succeeding Eric Adams, whose term ends in December. Mamdani is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 1 next year.

At just 34 years old, Mamdani not only becomes the city’s first Muslim mayor, but also its first South Asian and Africa-born leader, as well as the youngest mayor in more than a century.

“This victory belongs to everyone who believes New York is a home for diversity and justice,” Mamdani said in a victory video posted on his social media.

Previously serving as a member of the New York State Assembly, Mamdani is known as a progressive voice advocating for social justice, affordable housing, and economic equality.

His victory is widely seen as a reflection of a new, more inclusive political wave emerging across America. (AT Network)
