ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Office of the Special Envoy for Myanmar organized a meeting attended by key Myanmar stakeholders to encourage the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) and work towards holding an inclusive dialogue to find a comprehensive and durable political solution to the crisis in Myanmar.
The meeting was held in Jakarta, on 20-22 November 2023, and was attended by various stakeholders representing the Spring Revolution movement, interlocutors from the Myanmar authorities, and ethnic armed groups (EAO) signatories to the ceasefire agreement (NCA) or PPST Group. Also present on this occasion were representatives of the Laotian government as Chair of ASEAN 2024.
As Chair of ASEAN, Indonesia has held more than 180 meetings with various Myanmar stakeholders, including interlocutors from the authorities, during its Chairmanship term in 2023.
The Special Envoy’s Office has facilitated meetings held separately by group, namely interlocutors from the Myanmar authorities, representatives of the main Spring Revolution groups including the NUG, as well as PPST representatives. The main objective is to encourage the parties to the conflict to carry out inclusive dialogue, reduce violence, and help secure the process of delivering humanitarian aid to the Myanmar people affected by the conflict.
The Office of the Special Envoy facilitates the exchange of messages from each group which is expected to be the initial stage towards an inclusive national dialogue to find a comprehensive and sustainable solution to this crisis. Through these messages, stakeholders show positive indications regarding the possibility of holding inclusive and sincere dialogue in the near future.
The stakeholders also met separately with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs conveyed the message that inclusive dialogue and political solutions are the only appropriate solutions to overcome the crisis in Myanmar.
All stakeholders expressed high appreciation for Indonesia’s leadership and its consistent commitment to helping the people of Myanmar seek peace and stability. Stakeholders also support ASEAN’s role and the concrete implementation of 5PC.
“As a fellow ASEAN member, Indonesia is committed to continuing to help the people of Myanmar find a comprehensive political solution for sustainable peace and stability in Myanmar,” said Ambassador Ngurah Swajaya from the Myanmar Special Envoy’s Office, quoted in a press release, Saturday, November 25 2023.
Furthermore, Ambassador Swajaya said that “based on the review and decisions at the 43rd ASEAN Summit adopted last September, Indonesia hopes to work closely with the Chair of ASEAN in 2024 to ensure the sustainability of ASEAN’s efforts in helping the people of Myanmar.
Indonesia is very concerned about the current developments and urges all parties to the conflict to exercise restraint and avoid civilian casualties, in accordance with international humanitarian law, and also calls on all to participate in securing efforts to send humanitarian aid to refugees affected by the conflict.
