18 Killed in Tsingshan Nickel Smelter Explosion at IMIP Morowali

ASIATODAY.ID, MOROWALI – The number of victims killed in the PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) nickel smelter explosion in the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) increased to 18 people, from the previous 13 people.

“Since Monday, December 25 2023, the number of fatalities has increased. A total of 8 foreign workers and 10 Indonesian workers have died,” said Morowali Resort Police Chief, AKBP Suprianto, Tuesday, December 26 2023.

The five workers who were recently declared dead were previously treated in hospital due to serious burns caused by the explosion at the Tsingsang nickel smelter which was being repaired on Sunday, December 24 2023.

Meanwhile, IMIP management is still focused on treating victims who are still being treated at three health facilities, namely IMIP Clinics 1 and 2, as well as the Morowali regional general hospital.

“Today we are still focused on treating patients. There are 41 workers who are still undergoing treatment,” said Head of IMIP’s Media Relations Division, Dedy Kurniawan. (AT Network)
