ASIATODAY.ID, LUANG PRABANG – ASEAN Foreign Ministers on Monday, January 29 2024 urged an end to the bloody conflict in Myanmar.
These Foreign Ministers expressed their support for the regional peace plan and solutions owned and led by Myanmar to overcome the crisis.
Myanmar has been mired in bloody conflict since the military seized power in a coup in 2021 that sparked national chaos and abruptly ended a decade of democracy and economic reform.
ASEAN’s new special envoy to Myanmar, Alounkeo Kittikhoun, met with the military junta leader during a visit to Myanmar earlier this month. Neither ASEAN nor Laos, which currently chairs the organization, have made any announcements regarding the results of the meeting.
“We reaffirm ASEAN’s commitment to assist Myanmar in finding a peaceful, comprehensive and durable solution to the ongoing crisis, as Myanmar remains an integral part of ASEAN,” the ASEAN foreign ministers said in a statement.
“We reaffirm ASEAN unity and reiterate that all efforts in line with Myanmar’s (peace plan) must be supported, in coordination with the ASEAN chair,” the statement continued.
ASEAN has faced internal disputes over how to resolve the Myanmar crisis.
Myanmar’s military junta has been fighting on multiple fronts to quell an uprising waged by pro-democracy militias allied with the shadow government and ethnic minority armies. The Myanmar junta calls them terrorists and refuses to negotiate with them.
The previous ASEAN chair, Indonesia, initiated a series of diplomacy to encourage dialogue between the conflicting parties in Myanmar. (AT Network)
