Indonesia Invites ASEAN and Asia Pacific Countries to Implement AI Ethics

Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology of Indonesia, Nezar Patria. Doc

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia invites a number of countries to speed up the implementation of the Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics Guidelines. The goal is to avoid misuse of AI in the future.

Meanwhile, RAM AI Ethics is a guide from UNESCO which aims to ensure that the use of artificial intelligence does not become a threat to the survival of humanity.

In this lobbying effort, the Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology of Indonesia, Nezar Patria, met with ASEAN and Asia Pacific member countries at the Brdo Congress Center, Slovenia, Tuesday, February 6 2024.

“There is no country that is too dominant in controlling other countries in the development of AI. Because AI has an impact on all of humanity, so we need a common view, and the principle of no one left behind must continue to be applied,” said Nezar, quoted from a press release, Thursday, February 7 2024.

Currently, said Nezar, not all countries in the ASEAN and Asia Pacific regions are ready to implement the ethical guidelines initiated by UNESCO. However, Indonesia is committed to being responsive and ready to collaborate with ASEAN countries that show a willingness and desire to implement RAM AI ethical guidelines.

“There must be strong collaboration from all countries. Including increasing the capacity of human resources in each country regarding the latest developments in AI governance,” he said.

At the meeting in Slovenia, countries in the ASEAN and Asia Pacific regions exchanged ideas and experiences regarding the implementation of AI in their respective territories. Including, regarding the implementation of AI ethical guidelines.

“A number of countries in ASEAN have not implemented or are ready for RAM, but several have shown the will and desire to implement it. So, later we, together with other countries in ASEAN, will try to speed up this RAM process,” he said.

Apart from ASEAN and Asia Pacific, Indonesia is exploring partnership opportunities to accelerate AI development within the country. One of the countries being explored is the United States (US).

According to Nezar, Indonesia’s commitment to developing AI technology requires the support of cooperation with large countries such as the United States.

“The collaboration takes the form of transferring knowledge related to the use of AI,” he stressed. (AT Network)
