ASIATODAY.ID, DENPASAR – The United Nations World Water Development 2024 report states that almost half of the world’s population experiences difficulty accessing water and sanitation.
Director General of Multilateral Cooperation, Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tri Tharyat conveyed the report at a Press Conference at the Nusa Dua Convention Center, Bali, Sunday, 19 May 2024.
“The UN Water report is very sad. The report states that in 2022 around half of the world’s population will experience a situation of severe water scarcity,” he said.
In detail, as many as 2.2 billion people live without access to drinking water and clean water. Meanwhile, 3.5 billion of them lack access to sanitation.
As a result, achieving the 6th Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to ensuring the availability and implementation of water and sanitation did not go according to plan.
“In general, the UN secretary general’s report from the 2030 target to 2023 [SDGs achievement] is only half. In general, developing countries have only achieved 12%,” he said.
Thus, this will become a serious issue to be discussed at the 10th World Water Forum which will be held in Bali on 18-25 May 2024.
Meanwhile, Indonesia’s SDGs achievements are reported to be quite dominant.
The position exceeds 66% in 2023. Regarding the 2024 World Water Forum, there are at least 4 main things that Indonesia is fighting for.
First, related to international agreement through the UN general assembly session regarding the determination of World Lakes Day.
Second, an agreement to return to Indonesia’s proposal to form a center of excellence regarding the issues of water and climate change and resilience to the two existing situations.
Third, related to integrated water resources management, especially on small islands, which is of interest to a number of developing countries.
“Fourth, Indonesia’s efforts to provide a legacy with a number of concrete projects in the water sector. There is data officially presented on more than 100 projects that have been curated by the Indonesian Government,” he concluded. (ATN)
