ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Retno Marsudi attended the Summit of the Future held at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, 22-23 September 2024.

The meeting was held to foster global consensus in strengthening multilateralism to overcome current and future global challenges. The theme raised was “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Future”.

In her speech, Retno highlighted the importance of a collaborative paradigm to face the big challenges facing the world today, including geopolitical rivalries, gloomy economic recovery, and the climate and energy crises.

Three main messages conveyed by Minister Retno:

First, realizing lasting peace. Peace that creates justice, stability and development.

“Peace can only be realized if international law is enforced consistently without double standards,” said Retno, quoted in a broadcast by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In this context, Retno called for an immediate end to the genocide committed by Israel in Palestine and emphasized the importance of a two-state solution for Palestine.

Second, ensuring guarantees for the right to development.

Retno called for joint efforts to accelerate the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Trade discrimination and debt traps in developing countries or the Global South must be stopped.

“The gap must be bridged so that no country is left behind,” said Retno.

Third, realizing an inclusive world order.

Global governance that is more adaptive, responsive and effective must be realized, among other things, through reform of the United Nations Security Council, global financial architecture and the multilateral trading system.

“Reform of the multilateral system must take into account the voices and interests of developing countries,” stressed Retno.

Apart from the plenary session, Retno also participated in the interactive dialogue session. He again emphasized the urgency of reforming the multilateral system and the importance of representing developing countries in global governance.

“We must work together to create peace, prosperity and justice for future generations,” concluded Retno.

The Summit of the Future produced three documents, namely the Pact of the Future, the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations. These three documents contain a global commitment to reform the multilateral system, strengthen cooperation in the digital sector and collaborate for future generations.

The series of Summit of the Future meetings began with Action Days on 20-21 September 2024 which was attended by representatives of parliament, local government, civil society and youth and the private sector. (AT Network)
