Microsoft to Invest Millions More in AI in South Africa

Microsoft headquarter. Doc

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Microsoft has officially announced a massive investment of $1.7 billion to accelerate Indonesia’s digital transformation. The investment will focus on strengthening cloud infrastructure and advancing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities — establishing Indonesia as a key digital hub in Southeast Asia.

“Digital transformation is a direct mandate from our President, and we are supporting it with policies that make Indonesia more competitive — both nationally and regionally,” said Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, quoted on Friday, April 18, 2025.

She also highlighted the need to broaden public understanding of AI, not just as a trend, but as a concrete tool to enhance productivity and drive economic growth.

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, added that regulatory readiness is a crucial foundation for the sustainable growth of the digital ecosystem.

“Through our Government Cloud initiative, we are building a robust national data governance system. While it may not be fully owned by the government, it is developed within a well-defined national data classification and management framework,” he explained.

Indonesia to Become Microsoft’s Strategic Cloud Region in Southeast Asia

According to Microsoft Indonesia President Director, Dharma Simorangkir, the investment will fund the launch of a new cloud region in Indonesia — a move that will not only serve domestic needs but also support multinational companies operating across Southeast Asia.

“The cloud region launch is part of Microsoft’s global AI Tour, which will take place in Jakarta on May 27, 2025. This is more than a technology rollout — it marks Indonesia’s readiness to lead in the global AI ecosystem,” Dharma stated.

This investment aligns with a prior commitment by Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, who announced the expansion during Microsoft Build: AI Day at the Jakarta Convention Center in April 2024.

“We’re excited to bring our next-generation AI infrastructure to Indonesia. From NVIDIA and AMD to our own Microsoft Maia chips, we’re deploying world-class AI training and inference capabilities,” Nadella said.

He emphasized that the upcoming data center infrastructure will empower developers across Southeast Asia to build, train, and scale their AI models using some of the most advanced technologies available. (AT Network)
