World Bank’s PROGREEN Trust Fund Extended to 2031

Green landscape in Sri Lanka. Special

ASIATODAY.ID, PARIS – The World Bank and three development partners—Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom—announced the extension of PROGREEN, a multi-donor trust fund for sustainable and resilient landscapes.

The extension of PROGREEN underscores the international community’s commitment to bolstering investments in forests, landscapes, and nature that deliver development wins for people. Approximately one percent of the global working population is employed in forest sectors. Forests provide many ecosystem services, including clean air, erosion control, and stronger food and water security.

“Forests are essential for job creation and economic development globally,” said Genevieve Connors, Acting Global Director for Environment, World Bank, June 26, 2025.

“With the extension of PROGREEN, we’re saying loud and clear: investments in forests, landscapes, and nature deliver pathways out of poverty for the most vulnerable communities in the world.” We appreciate the invaluable support from our donor partners and look forward to continuing this partnership with both current and future donors.

PROGREEN is helping governments to bring nearly 4 million hectares under sustainable forest management while increasing benefits for 4 million people in targeted landscapes. Since its inception in 2021, PROGREEN has worked across 76 countries providing finance, technical assistance, and policy support to help countries invest in and sustainably manage their landscapes, with an emphasis on tropical forest biomes. Through targeted programs, PROGREEN advances sustainable landscape management and forest economies that benefit people and the environment.

As of June 2025, PROGREEN has a portfolio of US$209 million in support of 14 investment programs and 96 knowledge programs. These country programs are complemented by a global program, which pilots and refines novel approaches to emerging priority landscape themes, including landscape governance, biodiversity, and nature-based tourism.

PROGREEN’s operations are integrated into the World Bank Group’s programming and project cycles. This integration enhances the effectiveness of PROGREEN’s financing and guides additional lending by the World Bank Group. On average, every US$1 of a PROGREEN-financed investment informs an additional US$63 in World Bank Group financing. (AT Network)
