ASIATODAY.ID, MEDAN — Four State Islamic Universities (UIN) across Indonesia are collaborating to draft a strategic policy brief in support of President Prabowo Subianto’s global peace diplomacy agenda, particularly regarding the Palestine issue. The academic recommendations will be submitted to the Government, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar announced the initiative during the International Seminar and Conference of the Malay-Islamic World at UIN North Sumatra (UINSU) in Medan on Monday, November 24, 2025.
He emphasized that this series of international forums is a direct academic follow-up to President Prabowo’s address at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York.
“The four UIN campuses are jointly organizing these international seminars as an academic contribution to President Prabowo’s global policy direction,” the Minister stated.
Four UIN Campuses Address Key Global Issues
1. UIN Alauddin Makassar
Theme: Towards a Two-State Solution: President Prabowo Subianto’s Key Role in Achieving Peace in Gaza.
Held on November 17, 2025, the forum featured global scholars including Prof. Robert W. Hefner of Boston University and Palestinian journalist Revda Selver Iseric. Discussions focused on Indonesia’s strategic role in advancing a two-state solution and President Prabowo’s commitment to just and lasting peace in Gaza.
2. UIN North Sumatra, Medan
Theme: Reading the Geopolitical Direction of President Prabowo: Revitalizing the Role of the Malay-Islamic World in the New Global Order.
The seminar examined how religious values can strengthen diplomacy and ensure Indonesia’s sustained support for Palestine in the global arena.
3. UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya
This forum will explore Indonesia’s model of religious moderation, highlighting the intellectual foundations that shape Indonesia’s moderate Islamic identity and its contributions to peaceful global engagement.
4. UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta
Serving as the concluding forum, UIN Jakarta will consolidate all insights and formulate them into a comprehensive policy brief to be formally delivered to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Indonesia Poised as a Center of Modern Islamic Civilization
Minister Nasaruddin noted that Indonesia is increasingly recognized as a rising center of modern Islamic civilization. Through the use of soft power and humanitarian diplomacy, Indonesia is well positioned to play a more decisive role in resolving global conflicts—including advancing the two-state solution for Palestine.
“Through these four international seminars, we aim to deliver meaningful contributions to President Prabowo’s peace diplomacy,” he affirmed.
Strengthening the Role of the Malay–Islamic World
During the opening ceremony, marked by a traditional drum performance, the Minister highlighted the growing relevance of the Malay–Islamic world within a shifting geopolitical landscape.
He said President Prabowo’s renewed push for the two-state solution has become a global talking point, reaffirming Indonesia’s role as a credible mediator.
Southeast Asia—home to one-fifth of the world’s Muslim population, including 242.7 million Indonesian Muslims—holds considerable potential to become a major hub of modern, moderate Islamic thought.
Support from Regional Government
Representing North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution, Assistant for Governance and Public Welfare Basarin Yunus Tanjung expressed the provincial government’s support for strengthening academic contributions to Indonesia’s foreign policy.
“North Sumatra supports educational initiatives that help strengthen Indonesia’s geopolitical position on the international stage,” he said.
The four-campus seminar series has become a strategic platform for scholars to produce policy recommendations that reinforce the role of the Malay–Islamic world in navigating global challenges—from geopolitical tensions to social fragmentation—grounded in the principles of moderation, mediation, civility, openness, and justice.
