ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia’s Patimban Port has entered a new chapter in its transformation into a global maritime gateway following the launch of its first international container shipping service, strengthening the country’s ambition to build a more competitive trade and logistics network.
The milestone was marked by the maiden arrival of MSC ARIA III, a container vessel operated by global shipping company Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), at Patimban Global Gateway Terminal on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
The arrival officially launched international container operations through the Enhanced Seahorse Service, connecting Patimban with major Asian trade routes, including China, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia.
The development represents a significant step in Indonesia’s efforts to integrate its industrial centers with global supply chains while improving export connectivity and logistics efficiency.
International Confidence in Patimban’s Readiness
The first international container call involved cargo handling of approximately 796 container boxes, equivalent to 1,539 TEUs, including 96 fully loaded containers.
MSC ARIA III, a Liberia-flagged container vessel with a gross tonnage of 28,097, a length overall of 215.29 meters, and a draft of 11.55 meters, arrived from Singapore before continuing its voyage to Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia, after completing operations at Patimban.
Head of Patimban Port Authority (KSOP Class II Patimban) Mohd Arief Agustian said the maiden international service demonstrated growing confidence from global shipping operators in Patimban’s infrastructure, operational readiness, and port ecosystem.
“The maiden international container service reflects increasing international trust in the readiness of Patimban’s infrastructure, services, and port ecosystem,” Arief said.
He added that the new service is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s maritime connectivity while providing more efficient logistics options for exporters, importers, industries, and businesses.
Patimban Eyes Direct Routes to Europe and US
Following the launch of international container operations, Indonesia is now preparing the next stage of Patimban’s global expansion through potential direct shipping routes to Europe and the United States.
PT Pelabuhan Patimban Internasional (PPI), together with Patimban Global Gateway Terminal (PGT), is currently discussing the development of direct call services connecting Patimban with major global markets.
PPI CEO Fuad Rizal said discussions are underway to establish direct maritime links from Patimban to Europe and the United States.
“We have discussed with PGT the possibility of opening direct routes from Patimban to Europe and from Patimban to the United States,” Fuad said during a visit to Patimban Port in Subang, West Java.
The planned routes are expected to improve export efficiency, reduce logistics barriers, and strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian products in international markets.
However, PPI emphasized that sufficient cargo volumes, cooperation with exporters, and commitments from shipping operators remain essential before the direct routes can be fully implemented.
“We need to build sufficient cargo volumes at Patimban from exporters and operators before direct shipping services can be implemented,” Fuad said.
A Strategic Pillar of Indonesia’s Industrial Growth
Patimban Port was developed as a strategic complement to Tanjung Priok Port, Indonesia’s busiest maritime gateway, which has faced increasing capacity pressures due to growing trade and industrial activity.
Located in Subang, West Java, Patimban is positioned near major industrial areas and is expected to support export-oriented industries across West Java and East Java.
The port is designed to become a key logistics hub supporting automotive, manufacturing, and other industrial sectors while creating a more efficient connection between Indonesian producers and global consumers.
Fuad said PPI continues to strengthen cooperation with central and regional governments, private-sector partners, and port-related institutions, including customs, immigration, and quarantine authorities, to develop Patimban into one of Indonesia’s flagship ports.

The expansion of Patimban’s international services comes amid a global shift toward more resilient and diversified supply chains.
