ASIATODAY.ID, YOGYAKARTA — Indonesia and India have officially launched a landmark partnership to conserve the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Prambanan Temple Complex, reinforcing their shared commitment to protecting one of Asia’s most significant cultural treasures while deepening decades of strategic cultural cooperation.

The initiative was inaugurated on Wednesday as Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the ninth-century temple complex in Yogyakarta, marking the formal start of a long-term conservation project jointly undertaken by the two countries.

The collaboration stems from commitments reached during the Indonesia–India strategic partnership talks in 2025 and represents a major milestone in bilateral efforts to preserve shared cultural heritage. Recognized as one of the world’s finest examples of Hindu temple architecture, Prambanan reflects centuries of historical and civilizational links between Indonesia and India.

Speaking in Jakarta a day before the visit, Prime Minister Modi described Prambanan as a powerful symbol of the enduring cultural ties connecting the two nations. He said the conservation project demonstrates their shared responsibility to safeguard an irreplaceable part of humanity’s cultural heritage for future generations.

The project is being implemented through cooperation between Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture, the Indonesian Heritage Institute, and India’s Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Preparatory work—including technical assessments, site surveys, and conservation planning—has been completed to ensure that restoration activities follow internationally recognized heritage conservation standards.

The initiative follows the signing of a Letter of Intent on the Conservation and Restoration of the Prambanan Temple Complex during the bilateral meeting between President Prabowo and Prime Minister Modi. The agreement provides the institutional framework for long-term cooperation in protecting one of Southeast Asia’s most important archaeological and cultural sites.

The conservation effort comes as visitor numbers continue to rise. More than 2.3 million people visited Prambanan in 2025, while the temple complex welcomed over 1.3 million visitors during the first half of 2026 alone. The growing interest highlights Prambanan’s increasing prominence as a global cultural tourism destination and its expanding contribution to Indonesia’s tourism economy.

Beyond preserving an iconic monument, the partnership demonstrates how international collaboration can strengthen the protection of world heritage sites through knowledge exchange, technical expertise, and shared conservation practices.

As Indonesia and India continue to expand their strategic partnership, the Prambanan conservation project stands as a flagship example of cultural diplomacy—protecting a priceless legacy while ensuring that one of the world’s greatest temple complexes can be appreciated by generations to come.
