ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia is accelerating efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities by expanding strategic partnerships with technologically advanced countries, as Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin held separate high-level meetings with the ambassadors of South Korea and Finland to discuss future cooperation in defense technology, industrial development, and security capabilities.
The meetings, held at the Ministry of Defense in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to building a modern, resilient, and self-reliant defense ecosystem through international collaboration.
During his meeting with South Korean Ambassador Yoon Soon Gu, Minister Sjafrie discussed concrete steps to deepen the Indonesia–South Korea strategic defense partnership, including preparations for a future 2+2 Foreign and Defense Ministers’ Dialogue, military education and training cooperation, air defense system development, and strengthening defense industry collaboration.
Both sides agreed that defense industrial cooperation should move beyond strategic dialogue toward the implementation of tangible projects, including resolving technical aspects, accelerating knowledge and technology transfer, and ensuring balanced benefits for both countries.
The discussion also covered the progress of ongoing defense cooperation programs, including the final stages of a next-generation fighter aircraft development initiative.
The talks come amid Indonesia’s continued evaluation of South Korea’s KF-21 Boramae fighter aircraft program. Indonesian officials have previously stated that Jakarta is no longer participating as a co-developer in the KF-21 project and is exploring a procurement arrangement for the aircraft from South Korea.
The Indonesian government has emphasized that any defense procurement decision will be carried out through established procedures while considering operational requirements, technological benefits, and national strategic interests.
Expanding Cooperation with Finland
Separately, Minister Sjafrie welcomed Finnish Ambassador Pekka Kaihilahti to discuss opportunities for expanding bilateral defense cooperation between Indonesia and Finland.
The meeting focused on several strategic areas, including data sovereignty and protection, C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) technology, satellite communications, Maritime Domain Awareness, surveillance systems, cybersecurity, and maritime defense capabilities.
The two countries view these sectors as increasingly important amid growing security challenges involving digital threats, maritime competition, and the need for advanced monitoring capabilities.
Indonesia and Finland expressed their commitment to strengthening defense cooperation through continuous dialogue, technology collaboration, and partnerships that contribute to national resilience and regional stability.
Strengthening Indonesia’s Global Defense Network
The parallel engagements with South Korea and Finland reflect Indonesia’s broader strategy to diversify and deepen international defense partnerships while strengthening domestic capabilities.
As Southeast Asia’s largest economy and a key player in the Indo-Pacific, Indonesia has been pursuing defense cooperation that delivers more than military procurement, emphasizing technology transfer, industrial development, human resource improvement, and long-term strategic value.
Through partnerships with countries possessing advanced defense technologies, Jakarta aims to accelerate military modernization while building a stronger national defense industry capable of supporting future security needs.
The latest discussions reaffirm Indonesia’s role as an active contributor to regional security cooperation and demonstrate its commitment to maintaining strategic partnerships based on mutual respect, innovation, and shared interests. (AT Network)
