ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Japan’s leading energy company INPEX Corporation is strengthening its strategic partnership with Indonesia through the development of the Abadi LNG Project in the Masela Block, one of the country’s most significant energy projects.

Through its subsidiary INPEX Masela Ltd., the company has signed three Heads of Agreements (HoAs) with Indonesian state-owned enterprises to establish a framework for potential long-term sales and purchases of LNG and natural gas from the Abadi LNG Project.

The agreements involve PT PLN (Persero) and PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN) for LNG supply cooperation, as well as PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) for natural gas supply.

The agreements were signed during the 49th Indonesia Petroleum Association Convention and Exhibition (IPA Convex) 2025 in Tangerang, marking a significant step toward the realization of Indonesia’s next major LNG development.

A Strategic Energy Project for Indonesia

Located in the Masela Working Area in the Arafura Sea, Maluku, the Abadi LNG Project is among Indonesia’s largest natural gas developments and has been designated as a National Strategic Project (PSN).

The offshore field is located approximately 180 kilometers from Yamdena Island, with water depths ranging between 400 and 800 meters.

Under the revised Plan of Development (POD) approved in 2023, the project is designed to produce:
– 9.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG
– 150 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of pipeline gas
– 35,000 barrels per day of condensate

The development is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s domestic energy supply, support industrial growth, and create new economic opportunities in eastern Indonesia.

Pioneering Cleaner LNG Development

Beyond its production capacity, Abadi LNG is positioned as a milestone in Indonesia’s energy transition.

The project is planned to become Indonesia’s first LNG project to integrate Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology from the start of production, supporting efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining natural gas as a transition energy source.

The CCS approach aligns with Indonesia’s commitment to achieving a lower-carbon economy while ensuring reliable energy availability for future growth.

Deepening Indonesia–Japan Energy Cooperation

The Abadi Masela Project represents decades of cooperation between Indonesia and Japan in the energy sector.

INPEX has maintained a long-term presence in Indonesia, contributing investment, advanced technology, and expertise to support the country’s energy development.

The latest agreements highlight the growing importance of LNG cooperation amid increasing demand for secure, affordable, and cleaner energy across Asia.

As Indonesia accelerates industrial development and strengthens its role in the regional energy landscape, the Abadi LNG Project is expected to become a strategic bridge connecting energy security, investment growth, and sustainable development. (AT Network)
