ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia is laying the foundation for a new energy era as the country accelerates hydrogen development while strengthening strategic oil and gas capacity to ensure energy security during the global transition toward cleaner energy.
Through PT Pertamina (Persero), Indonesia’s state energy company, the country is advancing an integrated energy strategy that combines future-oriented clean energy investment with reliable energy supply to support economic growth and industrial competitiveness.
At the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit & Exhibition (GHES) 2026 in Jakarta, Pertamina Deputy President Director Oki Muraza highlighted hydrogen as a strategic energy source that will become an important part of Indonesia’s future energy landscape.
“Hydrogen ecosystem development will become a new milestone in Indonesia’s energy transformation,” Oki said during the event at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JCC).
Building Indonesia’s Hydrogen Economy
Pertamina is developing a nationwide hydrogen ecosystem covering production, utilization, infrastructure, technology innovation, and strategic partnerships.
A flagship project is the development of a hydrogen hub in Sei Mangkei and Kuala Tanjung, North Sumatra, with a planned production capacity of up to 4,000 kilograms of hydrogen per day.
The project represents Indonesia’s ambition to move beyond energy production toward the development of a competitive clean energy value chain, supporting future industries and attracting global investment.
Oki said the success of Indonesia’s hydrogen ecosystem will depend on strong cooperation between government, industry, technology companies, and financial institutions.
Pertamina is focusing on four strategic foundations: strengthening policy frameworks, accelerating technology development, expanding financing support, and establishing integrated infrastructure.
“By optimizing strategic national assets, hydrogen development can become more efficient, competitive, and economically viable,” Oki said.
From Green Hydrogen to Blue Ammonia
Pertamina’s hydrogen initiatives are expanding across Indonesia’s key economic regions.
In Plaju, South Sumatra, the company is developing a solar-based green hydrogen pilot project with a capacity of 20 kilograms per day.
In Lampung, a geothermal-based green hydrogen facility is targeted to enter commercial operation in November, with an initial capacity of 100 kilograms per day.
The company is also developing a hydrogen mobility ecosystem in Jakarta, while in West Java it is advancing waste-to-hydrogen development through technology that converts biogas from waste and wastewater into hydrogen, supported by cooperation with the Korean government.
In eastern Indonesia, Pertamina is exploring the potential of natural hydrogen resources in Sulawesi and developing blue ammonia projects in Maluku and Papua to support industrial demand and open future export opportunities.
These initiatives place hydrogen as one of Indonesia’s strategic instruments in achieving a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Strengthening Energy Security During Transition
While investing in future energy sources, Indonesia continues to strengthen conventional energy supply to maintain stability during the transition period.
Pertamina’s upstream operations remain a key contributor, particularly through Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) Zona 4 in South Sumatra.
Operating across 28,282 square kilometers, Zona 4 manages seven oil and gas fields, 98 production facilities, and more than 1,000 producing wells.
By July 2026, the operation recorded approximately 27,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 506 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD), making it one of Indonesia’s important contributors to national energy supply.
Pertamina President Commissioner Mochamad Iriawan recently reviewed operations in Prabumulih, South Sumatra, emphasizing the importance of production reliability, operational efficiency, and safety standards.
“Productivity must go hand in hand with strong Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) practices to ensure sustainable operations,” Iriawan said.
Pertamina Corporate Communication Vice President Muhammad Baron said upstream optimization remains essential to supporting Indonesia’s energy independence agenda.
“Every increase in oil and gas production strengthens national energy resilience while ensuring energy availability for society,” Baron said.
Indonesia’s Role in Asia’s Energy Transition
Indonesia’s energy strategy reflects a growing priority among emerging economies: achieving a balance between decarbonization and energy security.
As Asia moves toward a cleaner energy future, Indonesia is positioning itself not only as a major energy producer but also as an emerging player in hydrogen, renewable energy, and low-carbon industrial development.
