ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a loan of $419.6 million for Indonesia.
The loan is to fund a citywide inclusive sanitation project in order to help Indonesia expand access to sanitation services that are climate change resistant, adequate and safely managed in the cities of Mataram, Pontianak and Semarang.
ADB Director for Indonesia Jiro Tominaga said that this project is one of the largest inclusive sanitation projects in Indonesia supported by ADB to date.
“This project aligns with our comprehensive initiative to address climate change. “ADB is pleased to continue working with Indonesia to expand access to better sanitation services, which are key to a healthy and productive population,” he said in an official statement, Wednesday, January 31 2024.
Tominaga explained that this sanitation project aims to strengthen the sanitation system for around 2.5 million people in the three cities.
This project is also designed based on the principle of inclusive sanitation throughout the city, which ensures that everyone has access to sanitation services that are handled appropriately by integrating sewerage and non-sewerage systems.
According to Tominaga, this project will improve and expand the existing sanitation system by building a wastewater treatment plant (IPAL) with a combined daily capacity of 57,000 cubic meters and around 200 kilometers of sewer network.
Design measures to ensure climate and disaster resilience have been included, such as building elevated structures to protect the WWTP from future flooding, implementing a drainage system at the WWTP site to manage rainwater volumes, and installing breakwaters to mitigate the impact of high tides and flood.
In addition, the project will focus efforts on improving faecal sludge management facilities, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and improving operational efficiency of sanitation service operators in areas such as governance, digitalization, and asset management. (AT Network)
