ASIATODAY.ID, BANGKOK – In a proud moment for Indonesia, Alue Dohong, a prominent environmental figure, has been officially appointed as the Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations for Asia and the Pacific, effective May 15, 2025.
The appointment was announced by FAO Director-General QU Dongyu, reinforcing the organization’s strategic focus on strengthening food security across the Asia-Pacific region.
Prior to joining FAO Asia and the Pacific, Alue Dohong served as Senior Expert Staff to the Minister of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia, and notably as the Vice Minister for Environment and Forestry from 2019 to 2024. Known for his deep expertise in environmental issues and climate resilience, he is widely respected both nationally and internationally.
Alue Dohong began his academic career in 1994 as a lecturer at the University of Palangka Raya, specializing in peatland restoration, environmental management, and sustainable development within the university’s graduate program in natural resource and environmental management.
He also served as the Kalimantan Coordinator for Wetlands International in Indonesia from 2003 to 2011, followed by a role as Senior Expert for the Central Kalimantan REDD+ Task Force from 2011 to 2013. From 2016 to 2019, he played a crucial role in Indonesia’s national environmental agenda as the Deputy Head for Construction, Operations, and Maintenance at the Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG).
Alue Dohong brings impressive academic credentials to his new post. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Management from the University of Queensland, Australia, a Master of Science in Environmental Management from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor’s degree in Development Economics from the University of Palangka Raya, Indonesia.
This appointment marks a significant milestone, highlighting global recognition of Indonesia’s leadership in environmental sustainability and food systems.
With his rich background in tropical ecology, restoration science, and sustainable policy, Alue Dohong is expected to play a key role in strengthening the Asia-Pacific region’s response to global food and environmental challenges. (AT Network)
